Effective communication allows leaders to clearly convey expectations, provide feedback, and make sure everyone is on the same page. It also helps leaders to build a positive and productive work environment, and to handle conflicts and difficult conversations. Strong leaders are able to communicate their vision, strategies and plans effectively to their team members and stakeholders. 

They are able to adapt their communication style to the audience and context, and to use different communication channels and tools to reach their goals. Effective communication is not just about what a leader says, but also about how they say it and the body language they use. What if an organization lacks a communicative leader?

To understand the importance of effective communication for leaders, it is helpful to look at what happens when an organization lacks a communicative leader. Some of the negative consequences include:

  • Confusion and misunderstandings: Without clear communication from a leader, team members may not understand the goals, objectives, and expectations of the organization. This can lead to confusion and misunderstandings, which can waste time and effort and negatively impact productivity.

Best communication models for leaders

Actually, there is no one “best” communication model for leaders, as different models may be more appropriate for different situations and contexts.

However, I find some models to be more effective  than others:

  1. Interactive Model: This model emphasizes the importance of two-way communication and feedback, and it encourages understanding of team member’s perspectives. It is based on the idea that communication is a process of negotiation and that all parties involved have the opportunity to contribute to the conversation. Characteristics of this model include active listening, mutual respect, and open-mindedness.
  2. Transactional Model: This model views communication as a continuous process of transactions between people. It emphasizes the role of nonverbal communication and the context in which the communication takes place. It helps leaders to understand how their actions and behavior can influence the communication and the relationship with their team. Characteristics of this model include nonverbal cues, active listening, and adaptability.
  3. Helical Model: This model focuses on the process of change in communication. It helps leaders to understand how communication patterns can change over time and how different patterns can be used to achieve change. It is based on the idea that communication is cyclical and that change is a process that occurs over time. Characteristics of this model include long-term perspective, adaptability, and understanding of change in communication patterns.
  4. Sender-Message-Channel-Receiver (SMCR) Model: This model is one of the simplest communication models, it helps identify and understand the different elements of communication and how they interact. The sender sends a message through a channel, which is received by the receiver. This model can help leaders to understand how to communicate effectively and to choose the best channel and medium for their message.

In addition to realizing which style is best suited to the situation, there are general communication skills you can develop:

  2. Speak clearly and concisely: Practice expressing yourself in a clear and concise manner, using simple and easy-to-understand language.
  3. Learn to adapt to different communication styles: Learn to adapt your communication style to different people and situations, taking into account factors such as culture, language, and personality.
  4. Practice nonverbal communication: Learn to use nonverbal cues such as facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice to communicate effectively.
  5. Get feedback: Seek feedback from others on your communication skills and use it to identify areas for improvement.
  6. Take a course or training: Look for communication training or course that can help you improve your skills. Some online or offline course can be found easily.
  7. Read and write: Reading books, articles, and other written materials can help you improve your vocabulary and writing skills, which can in turn help you communicate more effectively.   4. Business Communication Training: This type of training focuses on developing the skills necessary for effective business communication, such as writing professional emails, reports, and other business-related documents.
  5. Executive Communication Training: This type of training focuses on developing the specific communication skills required for leaders, such as strategic messaging, media training, and crisis communication.
  6. Cross-Cultural Communication Training: This type of training focuses on developing the skills necessary to effectively communicate with people from different cultural backgrounds, such as understanding cultural norms, values, and communication styles.
  7. NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) Training : This type of training focuses on how to use language, both verbal and nonverbal, to influence and communicate effectively with others. This training is developed by Richard Bandler and John Grinder and is based on the idea that the language we use shapes our thoughts and behavior.
